DURAsilstrip – Back-up material to sealants

The back-up material to sealants is used in the joints to adjust width to depth ratio as recommended by the engineers. The back-up material is usually placed in the joints (in concrete roads, especially) to allow the placement of the sealant to the desired depth. It should be noted that back-up material to sealants should be compatible with sealants and it must be resilient in nature. One need to be careful not to use materials impregnated with oil or bitumen. Usually polymer based closed-cell materials work best as back-up material to sealants.

DURAsilstrip - Back-up material to sealantsAn ideal back-up material to sealant should allow unrestrained expansion and contraction of sealants. It should ensure stronger bonding of sealants with masonry. Also it should help to maintain desired thickness of sealant at the joint’s centre and should not allow sealant wastage through seepage.

DURAsilstrip manufactured by Supreme Industries is an excellent back-up material to cold applied sealants and is widely used in concrete road construction. DURAsilstrip is a compressible polymer based material and is paper backed on one side as per IRC:57-2006-6.3. & 6.4. It does not allow sealant wastage through seepage and eliminates bubbling of sealant due to its closed-cellstructure.

As it is a closed-cell material, it is virtually non-absorbent and chemically inert to most solvents. Also it does not allow air or moisture entrapment. DURAsilstrip also does not stain or adhere to sealant materials. It is fully compatible with most other cold-applied sealant compounds.

It also ensures low moisture absorption and can be installed easily and quickly. It is easily compressible and stays in place. It will not discolour sealants or substrates.

Thus, DURAsilstrip provides the perfect backing for all types of construction, expansion, isolation, control, and pavement joints and is used in conjunction with a wide variety of cold-applied joint sealants.
